Split Peach
I just got done reading Memoirs of a Geisha (excellent book, by the way). Without giving too much away, there was one particular part where it was describing the different hairstyles. The hairstyle that the "apprentice geisha" wears is called a "split peach". From what I remember its kinda like a bun that is split down the middle and inside they have a colored silk scarf (I think its red or pink) that you get a little glimpse of. They call it the "split peach" because it is to resemble the woman's "hoo hoo".
When I read this part of the book I got a good chuckle. One of my good friends calls her "hoo hoo" a "peach". Apparently, all of her sisters refer to their nether-regions as their "peach". Anyhow, her oldest sister has a little girl. One of the first times I met this adorable little girl (she was probably 4 or 5 at the time) she kept referring to her "peach". At the time, I had no idea what she was talking about. Then she lifted up her dress (she had no underwear on) and said "Mommy says I need to let my peach air out!" I almost died of laughter when I realized what a "peach" was. When we left I asked my friend why they call it a "peach". She said she didn't know but that's what they have always referred to it as. Then she told me a story about her niece watching James and the Giant Peach. The first time she watched it she was very distraught. She went crying hysterically to her mom asking her why he wanted to eat the peaches. Her mom then had to explain that there were different meanings to the word peach just as there are different meanings to the word orange. She was okay with life after this explanation.
Now you can see why I thought this part in the book was so funny. I had never heard of anyone referring to the "hoo ha" as a "peach" besides my friend and her sisters. Come to find out that reference has been around a long time and my friend isn't as "off" as I thought she was. Now I see why there are songs about "peaches" as well. The one that comes to mind is (I'm not good with song titles or artists, so this a little bit of the chorus) "Millions of peaches, peaches for me." I know there's quite a few more, but I'm having a brain cramp right now. But, you get what I'm saying right???
